a. The Challenge – reduce flaring of natural gas by entering the gas market at the optimal stream. Associated gas output in the Permian region has outrun the available takeaway, and even seemingly minor pipeline restrictions have corresponded with big downward spot price swings for natural gas. This has flipped gas from a commodity to a waste product. Even with pipes full and flaring at record levels, sellers have had to pay to find an offtaker for their associated gas.
b. Permian Basin Natural Gas Price Spread & Opportunities – the Permian Basin is a very energy dense region of Texas and offers many opportunities. Not only does it contain the most active oil and gas basin in the United States but within two hours radius of Midland, Tx are three of the largest US wind farms and a dozen solar farms producing many opportunities for 21MM and our clients.
The natural gas takeaway capacity constraints have resulted in more gas flaring in the Permian on the one hand, and in a record-high spread between the Waha gas hub price and the U.S. benchmark Henry Hub in Louisiana, on the other hand.
